What is socialization?

There are many aspects to socialization.  The common misconception is that a puppy or dog has to play with other dogs to be socialized.  Yes, having positive dog interactions is definitely ONE way to socialize your dog, wrestling isn’t the only way. There are many other ways too.  These other ways put together over time, and presented in a positive way, can help your dog become “well socialized.”  Pick one or two things a day and slowly show them the things in our crazy two-legged world.  You are most certainly not limited to this list.  There are a thousand ways to help your dog learn and be calm and comfortable with its surroundings.  Make sure to take these things slow until you know they are comfortable with the situation.

  1. Go on a walk in your neighborhood, or with a friend in theirs.
  2. Set up playdates with dogs that have appropriate dog social skills.
  3. Go to the park and sit and do nothing.  Treat them for watching and being calm.
  4. Lure them onto safe objects such as a playground set or a park bench.
  5. Say “Hi” to people of all sizes, genders, races, and with disabilities.
  6. Sniffing and watching rolling objects such as bikes, cars, and wheelchairs.
  7. A quick visit to the vet or groomer…just for super special treats.
  8. At a comfortable distance feed them treats when there is a loud noise.
  9. Play in a river or stream.  Remember dogs are not all born knowing how to swim!
  10. Take a training class!  Working around dogs without playing is HUGE self-control practice.

The biggest thing we do wrong as humans is force a scary situation on dogs.  Try any way you can to make it easier for them so it is a positive experience.  Stop when they need you to, not because you want them to do just a little bit more. The more they succeed the first time, the easier it will be the next time. If anything is just too much, take a few steps back, reward your pup for looking and acting appropriate, and then leave and try another day!
